This horse hair raku piece is wheel thrown, trimmed embellished with a sculpted dolphin on the rim. Fired in my raku kiln with a copper blue glaze.

Raku pottery work is created using a unique firing process. Each piece is fired to approximately 1800 degrees Fahrenheit in a specially designed gas kiln. While the pieces are glowing a bright red-orange they are removed one at a time and placed into a metal container filled with combustible materials such as straw, sawdust, dried leaves, newspaper, etc. A reduction or carbonization process begins once the red hot pots ignite the combustible materials and the carbon smoke is absorbed into the white clay and the crackles of the rapidly cooled glaze. The reduction atmosphere in the smoking container may create metallic or iridescent lusters.

Each piece is unique and more porous than high-fired stoneware. For this reason, Raku pottery is produced for your visual and tactile delight. Enjoy!

Dimensions: 5" tall and 6" diameter
